  1. Collaborative Leadership vs. Hierarchy: a more sustainable management model?

True collaboration between leaders and employees contributes greatly to employee engagement, reduces employee turnover and builds happy, sustainable teams. Hierarchy is no longer a sustainable model for running a business.

  6. Chamber of Commerce Green Committees - How to effectively assist member businesses with their sustainability endeavors.

As Chambers strive to assist their members and build their local economies, many small businesses are looking for guidance in building a stronger sustainable community. Green Committees are popping up in many chambers and struggling with ways to engage members. While large businesses have internal programs, many small companies do not have the time or means to implement sustainable strategies. Chambers are trying to find the right approach to take - with much trial and error. A round table, brain storming session would be great to discuss this as a group.

  8. Climate Change as a Real Business Risk

    See: http://www.greenbiz.com/blog/2013/04/24/climate-change-real-business-risk?mkt_tok=3RkMMJWWfF9wsRonsqnMZKXonjHpfsX56u0sUaO%2FlMI%2F0ER3fOvrPUfGjI4ARMdiI%2BSLDwEYGJlv6SgFSLHEMa5qw7gMXRQ%3D

While the national debates surrounding fossil-fuel divestment and the Keystone XL pipeline earn the most attention in columns and talk shows these day, the deeper underlying desire among many shareholders is for the United States to become serious about the real risks of climate change. And to do something about it — or, at least, to form a consensus on the policy and economic strategies needed to primarily reduce atmospheric carbon.

  13. Leveraging our sustainable practices for public education and guest education

Each day when we welcome guests to our bed and breakfast, we give them an orientation to public areas and amenities. This includes the various kinds of compost and recycling. As we describe the vermiculture (worm farm) in our utility room, the woodland verge compost, the scraps for neighbors' pigs, returning egg cartons to the farmer, saving can tabs for charity and cans for another charity, upcycling materials to a crafter who makes beauty from scraps and how single stream recycling really works... they often start getting excited about what they can do at home or at work. Each person…

  14. Considering the environmental and social life cycle impacts in the supply chains of your products.

Beyond CSR, a truly sustainable company considers all of the impacts of its products from raw material extraction, transport, manufacture, distribution and disposal. Environmental LCA is an established technique that is becoming easier for smaller businesses to apply. Social issues like child and forced labor, low wages, excessive working time, and occupational hazards affect workers worldwide. How can we measure and then improve these impacts?
